Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Kolkata

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum ( BITM) , Kolkata, situated on Gurusaday Road, Kolkata, is the oldest Science museum in the City of Joy. It’s a lovely place that mixes fun with learning, for children and adults alike, and makes for a memorable and interesting visit.

We arrived at 11am on a cool winter morning. Aarshi has always loved visiting this place, and sure enough, it’s a virtual wonderland for kids. On one hand, you have gadgets that demystify science into pleasurable details. On the other hand, you have a play area for kids, featuring everything from a life-size playhouse, to trampoline balls, large-screen football games, to giant building blocks. And then you have the mock coal mine, TV station, toytrain etc… it all completes the picture.

As good luck would have it, Aarshi met her friend Prama at the museum. And the two fell into their ritual of games, in the true fashion of kids who are having a ball of a time. They tried the rides, the dollhouse, the trampoline balls, and everything else that their heart desired. It turned out (according to Prama’s mum) that her kid liked this place even better than the toyzone at the nearby Quest mall, and so she was a frequent visitor here. I made a mental note to bring Aarshi here more often.

We enjoyed building a robot from giant building blocks, drawing sketches together, and in general just hanging around and having a whale of a time.

It brought back memories of the times when, as a kid, I would visit this place and marvel at the gadgets around me, not understanding much but enjoying it very much all the same. The times have not changed much in that sense, and I am sure that Aarshi would feel the same way someday very soon.

Here are some pics taken on that day . The details about the museum can be found at:
